Can the Waterproof Cases Leak?

Some people are nervous about taking their camera underwater for the first time, and rightly so. It’s not a minor investment, and the last thing you want to do is ruin your camera. If you are feeling nervous, you can do as this article suggests and test in the bathtub first:

“First of all, try out the case with nothing in it (at least nothing valuable) either in your bathtub or a sink. Leave it there for a good hour or so. It’s an easy test, and will do wonders for your comfort level. Once your case has passed that test, go for a little more depth.”

Once you see that the water really can’t get into the case, you should feel comfortable taking it out in the ocean. Another precaution you may want to take is to put a long tether on the case and attach it to your wrist. This way, if you let go of the camera you can’t lose it.

Once you start using the case regularly, you’ll want to keep an eye on the seals, as that is where leakage could occur. Most people never report a problem with their cases, but it is a good thing to keep an eye on. If you haven’t used it in a while, just give it the bathtub test to reassure yourself before heading out.
